ArcelorMittal, 108 meter rails
The works at the ArcelorMittal rail rolling mill in Gijón, which will total an investment of more than 24 million euros, has been progressing since the beginning of 2016, taking advantage of the maintenance stops already scheduled. At the maintenance stop that began in August last year the multinational installed three new rolling mills. The purpose of these is to laminate the bloom from the Gijón steelworks that is used for long product (rail) – just as the billet is used for wire rod – and to shape the rail.
The new equipment, which will be universal and more modern, will allow to improve the quality and to approach already new developments of the line. But for the rolling mill to be perfectly suitable for the manufacture of a 108-meter rail, instead of the current 90 meters, it will still have to wait. At least, until the installation of the cooling system, which is expected to be undertaken this summer.
